One-Off Pottery Studio
ABOUT ME
Hi - My name is Jacqui Louw and welcome to my pottery studio.
What started as a hobby, has now become a full-time occupation for me.
I love the unpredictability, the richness of materials, techniques and creative possibilities of clay. I’m inspired by the art, chemistry and alchemy of ceramics : the transformation of earth, fire, and water into something fragile and enduring.
To me, handmade ceramic vessels are deeply intimate objects that nourish, sustain and bear witness to life's most personal moments. I explore form, colour, texture and symbolic meaning to express my sentiments about our relationship with the environment, gender and identity. My forms are simple, suggestive, asymmetrical and serpentine, reminiscent of our planet, Earth and the human body. Vibrant hues, complex layered textured glazes are central to my storytelling, expressing harmony and chaos.
With training in Australia, Denmark and Italy, I established OoPs – One-off Pottery Studio in 2019. Based in Hampton, I create, sell, teach, provide studio access and firing services. I also teach wheel-throwing and hand building at the Beaumaris Art Group and Brighton Recreation Centre.
